Downtown Small Business Relocation Grants Issued to Local Businesses
In June 2023, the Town of Chapel Hill Economic Development Department announced a new grant program to assist small businesses facing relocation in Downtown Chapel Hill. The program is a response to the recent increase in redevelopment activity on Rosemary and Franklin Streets. The team recognized the expense incurred by small business owners when relocating a business and understood the value of keeping local businesses in Downtown Chapel Hill.
Applications were accepted from July 1 through August 30, 2023. Department staff received several inquiries and provided technical assistance for the applications as needed, including translations of the guidelines and application. The program was marketed on a variety of platforms including social media, local radio, and advertised by several business support organizations.
On September 27, 2023, the Grant Review Committee met with Economic Development staff to review and evaluate a pre-screened selection of grant applications. The group carefully reviewed all eligible submissions according to the program guidelines, scored applications independently on a series of criteria, and discussed them before making funding recommendations.
The Department is excited to announce three qualified businesses, each being offered a grant award of $20,000 or more. The Partnership for Greater Chapel Hill-Carrboro will serve as a program partner to help issue funds to recipients. Grant funds will reimburse businesses for specific expenses to mitigate relocating costs, including short-term rental assistance and interior space improvements.
